The First State
As one of the thirteen original colonies, Delaware was the first to
ratify the Constitution of the United States which is proudly expressed on the state
flag.
A very detailed flag with many symbols, this flag features references from the
colonial era, set on a background of blue and buff to represent the uniform worn by
General George Washington. The buff diamond in the center represents the small size
but great value of Delaware. Each of the symbols within the diamond represents
different aspects of Delaware's economy that played integral roles in the development
of agriculture, commerce, transportation during the colonial era. The state motto,
"Liberty and Independence" reads across the bottom banner, above the date of which
Delaware became the first state to ratify the constitution.
