The Bay State
Symbolizing peace and liberty, the Massachusetts state flag features
simple elements with big meanings. The blue shield encompasses a Native Algonquin
American holding a bow and arrow, with the arrow facing downwards to symbolize peace.
Written in the blue ribbon across the bottom is the state motto which translates to,
"By the Sword We Seek Peace, But Peace Only Under Liberty," which is also partially
acted out by the bent arm and broadsword above the shield.
One of the original 13 colonies, Massachusetts was admitted into the
Union on February 6, 1788, as only the 6th territory to become a state. Honor the
historical moment by waving this flag high, and let patrons be reminded of Massachusetts'
colonial history every time they see the white five pointed star on the shield.
