Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
With its southern islands of limestone and northern of volcanic rock, the Northern Mariana Islands are a
commonwealth of the United States located in the western Pacific Ocean that enjoy a tropical marine climate nearly all year
round.
In 1972, three years before the Northern Mariana Islands were even formed, the citizens created a flag. A five
pointed star and the silhouette of a gray latte stone, which is a common stone used for foundations on the islands, sit on a
field of blue. The flag was flown only on land by both civilians and government, and officially adopted on July 4, 1976. It was
not until 1981 that the wreath encircling the star and stone was added.
