The Mount Rushmore State
South Dakota's rich diversity in industry and resources is reflected in the state flag. Agriculture,
manufacturing, mining, timber, and commerce are all expressed through icons in the state seal. The sun represents the original
nickname of the state, "The Sunshine State," while the current nickname, "The Mount Rushmore State," is
written around the seal in large yellow letters.
After many modifications, the current state flag was designed in 1992. This flag flies proudly throughout the
state of South Dakota, and reminds people of their state motto everyday, "Under God the People Rule."
