In Peace and War
The Merchant Marine is a fleet of U.S. civilian owned merchant ships that transports cargo and passengers
during times of peace, and also serves as an auxiliary to the U.S. Marine Corps during wartime. Created by the 74th Congress
of the United States on June 29, 1936, Merchant Marine Fleet services date all the way back to the Revolutionary War.
However, it wasn't until May 24, 1994 that the official Merchant Marine flag was introduced. Centered on a blue
background is an American Eagle atop the U.S. Shield with an anchor in the foreground - representing the Merchant Marine's loyalty
and service to the United States of America. The words "In Peace and War" are written above the eagle, and the year
1775 below to honor early Merchant Marine contributions to the formation of the United States.
