The Green Mountain State
The Vermont state flag as we know it today has been flying for nearly a century, well before it was officially
adopted by the state. Flown during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I, this state flag represents the things
that Vermont natives hold dear to their hearts. Forests, dairy, agriculture, and wildlife are all depicted in the state seal,
which is centered on a field of blue.
The crossed pine branches pay respect to the Vermont soldiers in the Battle of Plattsburgh in 1814, during the
War of 1812. The state motto, "Freedom and Unity," is written across the red ribbon below the seal, and Vermont
natives have been proud of this saying since 1919.
