The Mountain State
"Sic Semper Tyrannis," means "Thus Always to Tyrants." This Virginia motto is depicted on
their state flag, which features the seal centered on a blue field. Within the seal is the Roman Goddess (symbolizing Virginia)
with a spear and sword. She is standing over Tyranny, who is lying beneath her foot with a broken chain in one hand, a scourge
in the other, and her fallen crown nearby. This scene represents Virginia's state motto and victory over Great Britain.
This state flag was actually first used in the 1830s, but was not officially adopted until the beginning of the
American Civil War in 1861. Fly this flag proudly and always remember the beginnings of our great nation, as Virginia was only
the 10th state to join the union in 1788.
