The Evergreen State
Officially adopted on May 5, 1923, Washington is the only state to use a green field and an image of an actual
person. Based on a painting by Gilbert Stuart, the state seal is a portrait of George Washington within a yellow ring that
reads, "The Seal of the State of Washington 1889." 1889 represents the year Washington became the 42nd state to join the
union. Green is used as the background color to reflect its nickname as, "The Evergreen State."
This flag has flown proudly over the beautiful state of Washington for nearly a century and will
continue to represent state pride and the beginnings of our nation for years to come.
